Transcription: The resulting new House chamber, completed in 1857, is where current House members meet. In its early days, the room was richly decorated. The Speaker's rostrum was of white marble, and Representatives sat at carved oak desks, which have since been replaced. Until 1808, Representatives had only their desks as office space.
